To provide the county with the most accurate picture of how their design would perform, I created front-end responsive prototypes of the base theme so they could view interactions and really get a feel for how the sites would perform. This also allowed us to make changes a lot faster than had we mocked up each page at each breakpoint.
Since the San Mateo web team would be assisting with the creation of department sites after the initial batch launched, we built a Style Guide they could use to keep sites consistent with the overall theme.
We delivered a clean responsive theme that served both content creators and consumers. The web team could take our theme, build on it with the style guide, and feature important information specific to each department while maintaining a unified look across the county's web sites. Citizens in the County of San Mateo now had optimized access to vital county services no matter what device they using.
From the early element collage to the layout stack, Dave provided the gentle nudge to guide us and our organization at large to adopt and embrace our new identity.Jean-François Barthe, Systems Engineer for San Mateo County
Working iteratively throughout the design process allowed us to focus on what mattered when it mattered. Setting a visual direction through element collages, fine tuning content flow and interactions across devices with prototypes, and setting up the county's web team for the future with a style guide helped us create a more maintainable platform that exceeds the typical expectations associated with a local government's web presence.
